NOTES FROM THE MAESTRO

“Welcome to the opening night of our 2025–2026 season. This program, Freedom to Live, explores a powerful and universal theme—the human longing for freedom, identity, and artistic expression. These four works span continents, centuries, and cultures, yet each captures the spirit of resilience and joy in its own distinct voice.

We begin with Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, a work full of vibrant energy and rhythmic complexity. Ortiz, a leading composer from Mexico, draws inspiration from her heritage and the sacred symbol of the Huichol Blue Deer, Kauyumari. The result is an exhilarating soundscape that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Next, we are thrilled to present the Oklahoma premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 4, performed by the phenomenal Natasha Paremski. This piece is a fascinating fusion of Rachmaninoff’s lush Russian romanticism and the bold jazz influences he absorbed during his time in the United States. It’s deeply emotional, technically brilliant, and unlike anything else in the concerto repertoire.

After intermission, we launch into the majestic Sinfonietta by Leoš Janáček. Opening with a fanfare for twelve trumpets, this work was composed to honor the strength and optimism of the modern individual. Janáček called it a tribute to the “contemporary free man… his spiritual beauty and joy, his strength, courage, and determination to fight for victory.”

We close the evening with the iconic 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky—a celebration of triumph and national pride. Written to commemorate Russia’s defense against Napoleon in 1812, it’s a rousing finale that captures the spirit of collective strength and liberation.

This concert is not just an opening night—it’s a journey through freedom in sound. Thank you for joining us for what promises to be a powerful and uplifting start to the season.”
